Writing is usually not anyone’s idea of fun. “Oh, boy! I get to spend the day wordsmithing!” said almost no one ever.
Writing provokes anxiety for any number of reasons: a time crunch, too many ideas, too few ideas. Even how to get started can seem like an insurmountable obstacle.
Most of the time, people have a pretty good sense of what they want to say. The act of getting words down on paper (or across a screen), however, just seems daunting. As a teacher of writing, helping people articulate what they know they want to say was always incredibly satisfying. These days, I write for my own pleasure, at my own leisure. It’s definitely a luxury.
